Johann Strauss’ (the Younger) operetta "Die Fledermaus" is a masterful web of intrigue filled with misunderstandings, masquerades, and social satire. Gabriel von Eisenstein, a wealthy citizen, is supposed to serve a prison sentence—yet instead, he embarks on a romantic adventure. His once-humiliated friend Dr. Falke, known as "the Bat," lures him into a revenge plot at the exclusive ball of Prince Orlowsky. Unnoticed, Eisenstein’s wife Rosalinde and the maid Adele also attend, while Rosalinde’s lover Alfred is mistakenly imprisoned in Eisenstein’s place.
The ball becomes a stage for chaotic deceptions: disguises, champagne, and false identities lead society into a nocturnal labyrinth. By morning, the revelers end up in prison, where the intrigues are finally unraveled—accompanied by Johann Strauss’ captivating waltzes and humorous melodies.
Premiered in 1874, this operetta, presented here in a reduced version for soloists, choir, and chamber orchestra, effortlessly exposes the hypocrisy of a society obsessed with celebration. A timeless work that continues to captivate with its musical elegance and dark humor.
