Description

The special exhibition presents the Rupertus Cross, a masterpiece of early medieval goldsmithing and the oldest art treasure of the Salzburg Cathedral Museum. Made in the second half of the 8th century, the cross is crafted from fire-gilded copper, glass paste, and poplar wood and is considered the largest surviving metal cross of its time. As a symbol of Salzburg's Christian beginnings, it is closely associated with the founding saint Rupert and ranks among the most significant works in European art history.

The curator-led tour conveys current research findings, including modern examination methods and the evolution of monument preservation since the 1963 restoration. Technological advances in conservation are discussed alongside the art-historical classification of the object. Special emphasis is placed on the craftsmanship quality and the historical significance of the cross for Salzburg's identity.
