"L’amore artigiano" is a musical comedy of errors by Florian Leopold Gassmann, composed to a libretto by Carlo Goldoni. The opera, a dramma giocoso in three acts, tells a turbulent love story full of misunderstandings: Angiolina loves Giannino, who, however, desires Rosina, while Titto also courts Rosina. Madame Costanza tries in vain to confess her affection to Giro—but when unexpected mix-ups and flirtations throw their plans into disarray, a comedic dynamic emerges, reminiscent of Goldoni’s The Servant of Two Masters. Only in the finale does everyone find their happiness.
The opera, premiered in 1772 at the Rococo Theater in Schwetzingen, was once a great success but later faded into obscurity. This new production, a co-production with the Schwetzingen SWR Festspiele, is directed by Amélie Niermeyer with offbeat humor and contemporary elements. The Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, conducted by Carlo Benedetto Cimento, provides the musical interpretation. The performance is in Italian with German and English surtitles.
