Description

On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven's death, the Salzburg Philharmonic presents two of his most significant compositions: the overture to "Egmont" and the 5th Symphony in C minor. The latter, with its world-famous "fate motif," is one of the most influential works in classical music and symbolizes Beethoven's revolutionary spirit. In between, Joseph Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 2 in D major is performed by cellist Matthias Bartolomey. Haydn, Beethoven's teacher between 1792 and 1794, composed this work during the time Beethoven studied with him—a historical connection that makes the program particularly special.

Under the direction of conductor Elisabeth Fuchs, the concert pays tribute to Beethoven's formative influence on music history and his artistic relationship with Haydn. An evening that places masterpieces of classical music at the center.
