Description

On this evening, two central works of Passion music will be performed: Beethoven’s oratorio "Christus am Ölberge" and Schubert’s "Stabat Mater". The Lautten Compagney BERLIN, the Monteverdi Choir Hamburg, and soloists under the direction of Antonius Adamske will present the compositions, which explore the Passion story from different perspectives.

Beethoven’s "Christus am Ölberge" was composed against the backdrop of his advancing deafness and reflects, in expressive musical language, the inner struggle of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane – between human fear and divine mission. The work was premiered in Salzburg in 1817, a time of poverty and hunger following the "Year Without a Summer".

Schubert’s "Stabat Mater", composed at just 19 years of age, showcases his early mastery in sacred music. It blends classical tradition with romantic innovation and centers on Mary’s grief as she witnesses her son’s suffering. Both works offer a profound exploration of the theme of the Passion.
