Description

The Mozarteum Chamber Choir presents a concert that captures advent and winter themes in musical sounds. With works by Olivier Messiaen, Cecilia McDowall, Jonathan Dove, James MacMillan, Þorkell Sigurbjörnsson, Edvard Grieg, Max Bruch, Francis Poulenc, and Sally Beamish, the program spans from ancient Advent antiphons to contemporary compositions.

At its heart is the O Antiphon "O Oriens," which sets to music the call for the Morning Star and eternal light. Nordic clarity—evident in Grieg’s or Sigurbjörnsson’s pieces—meets French colorfulness as in Poulenc or Messiaen, while Romantic intimacy and modern choral music engage in dialogue. Accompanied by Michael Greifeneder on the organ and conducted by Christiane Büttig, the program not only tells the story of Christmas but also creates an atmospheric journey from darkness to light.

The concert invites listeners to experience the quiet tension between waiting and arrival as a sensory journey—between contemplative moments and the radiant expressive power of choral sound.
